INAUGURAL BOMSS MEETING
The first national meeting of the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS)was held at Selsdon Manor Hotel, Croydon on 21-22 January 2010.
BOMSS is a subgroup of the larger Association of Upper GI Surgeons, and fully endorsed by the Royal College of Surgeons, will be the main association for Bariatric Surgery in the UK.
Over 100 delegates heard the latest news and innovations from visiting international experts. There were also patient representatives and many allied professionals present.
A hot topic of conversation was the commissioning of services throughout the UK, with the current pressures that all commissioning groups face - this is clearly going to be a difficult time to find funds for these procedures but members of BOMSS will continue to argue that there is good evidence of health and economic benefit from bariatric procedures.
There was interesting and promising news for the future, in terms of even less invasive procedures to try and counteract the problems that obesity brings. There are many dozens of drugs in trials and new devices that can be placed through an endoscope but, as yet, all of these are in developmental stages.
An interesting section invited speakers from around the country to present and discuss unusual complications of bariatric surgery, allowing us all to learn by others experiences and to remind us that there is no surgery without risk.
Overall, this was a very promising first meeting and looks to have congregated a very committed group of surgeons from around the country to carry bariatric surgery forward for the foreseeable future.
